Quote......

My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.
- Adlai E. Stevenson Jr.

Granted, if he would still be living today, I would most likely not agree with all that he has said, or done. (Just read his biography). But, this quote is really intriguing. At first I was kind of like... Wait, I really agree with that. But then I thought about what he was really saying. Does, unpopular mean like, a criminal? Or does unpopular mean... a Christian? What is his definition of unpopular?

What do you think this quote means?

"What is his definition of unpopular?"
Well, I suppose that would depend on the society. If the society has a Christian foundation, being a criminal would put one in serious unpopularity. On the other hand, if the society is corrupt, being a Christian would fill the unpopular statis. But then the "safe to be unpopular" comes into play. Maybe its a society some promote where everyone is excepted, from all walks of life. However, if everyone is excepted no one is particularly unpopular, right?
So we have a society where one could be unpopular - you're just not thrown out because of it. And since this doesn't suggest my first example, I don't think I can say I agree with the quote. Of course, if you've read his biography, you would know where he's coming from far better than I.....those are just my thoughts. :)
